The Abbott Training Room is named in honor of Grace Abbott, born in 1878 in Grand Island, Nebraska. In 1907 she moved to Hull House in Chicago and began her career in social work.
In 1921 Abbott was appointed head of the Children’s Bureau in the Department of Labor. She also served as a representative for the United States to the League of Nations' advisory committee on child welfare from 1922 to 1934.
An American activist, teacher, and writer, Abbott championed extensive social reforms throughout her life that significantly improved the rights of immigrants, women, and children.
