The Beckett Conference Room is named in honor of Katie Beckett, born in 1978. Baby Beckett was medically fragile, and Medicaid would only cover her care if she lived in an institution.
Beckett’s mother advocated that Medicaid should support independent living alternatives since doing the “right thing” was more cost-effective. This action led to President Regan becoming aware of her story and a national policy shift.
The Katie Beckett waiver has since empowered half a million children with special needs to receive home health care so they can remain living with their families.
