The Wilson Training Room is named in honor of Mary Ellen Wilson, born in 1864. When her father died, her mother could no longer care for her. Before the age of two, she was placed in a home where she was physically abused, malnourished, and neglected.
Etta Angell Wheeler, a missionary, discovered young Wilson’s living situation. When she was ten, Wilson’s case was taken to the Supreme Court, becoming the first documented child abuse case in the United States. Wilson’s story led to the formation of the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in 1874.
